Balancing artistic development with technical refinement and career preparation, the graduate program represents the School of Music at its highest level of artistry and education. This balance is reflected in a three-part curriculum outlined below: Performance, Career Strategies and Research: History, Analysis and Opera Studies.  As a community of musicians, students in the graduate program work together and with our artist/faculty in preparing for artistic success as professional classical musicians. Specific information on individual concentrations is available at the links listed below.

Master of Music Curriculum Overview

Performance

Lessons, Masterclass, Recitals and Ensembles

The core courses of study for the Master of Music program are the weekly private lessons and weekly studio masterclasses. The faculty of the School of Music consists of distinguished, practicing professionals. Each faculty member is highly qualified through experience and continued professional activity to offer individual attention and personal guidance. Students’ individual performance activities also have piano support by a team of pianists provided by the School of Music. All graduate students are required to prepare and perform two concert recitals. Students in the Vocal Performance program substitute a major role in an opera production for one recital. Students are required to participate in School of the Arts ensemble performances (Cantata Singers, Chamber Music, Contemporary Music Ensemble [SACE], Jazz Ensemble, Opera, Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble).

Career Strategies: Portfolio, Auditioning, Entrepreneurship, Outreach, and Recording

The Career Strategies course sequence consists of five one term courses. Each course specializes in one aspect of career preparation. Students are required to take at least three of the five courses offered: Portfolio concentrates on preparing a professional portfolio including writing, public relations (i.e., contacting print and electronic media, interviewing, résumés and press kits); concert and recital program building (i.e., program selection, printed program writing and terminology); and royalties, copyrights and intellectual property. Auditioning concentrates on audition application, preparation and etiquette; mock and real auditions; contracts, financial issues and taxes; and contracting other musicians. Entrepreneurship concentrates on agencies, grant writing, networking, and creating a promotional website. Outreach concentrates on community relations and outreach, communicating with an audience, touring, organizing a workshop and operating a teaching studio. Recording concentrates on studio recording, mixing and editing; and producing and marketing a compact disc recording.

Research Topics: Analysis, History and Opera Studies

Library and Internet Research

This required two-term course teaches students how to use the tools of bibliographic research including new technology; fair use of published material; copyright law; and proper form in writing, annotating and presenting information on musical subjects.

Research Topics: Analysis, History and Opera Studies

Students are required to take one Research Topics course.  Three courses are offered each year, giving students a choice of six different topic courses during their two years in the master’s program. Each year, one of the courses offered will be primarily analytical in approach, framed within its historical context; the second will assume an historical perspective, but would include analysis; the third will concentrate on an opera studies topic. The topics offered also engage issues of performance practice and interpretation.

Intensive Arts

Intensive Arts at the School of the Arts is a program that is unique among arts institutions. During the two-week period following Thanksgiving break, lessons, master classes, workshops and interdisciplinary electives on an accelerated schedule substitute for the regular class schedule.

Specialized Courses

Specialized Courses are offered for specific graduate degrees (e.g., students in the guitar program take Guitar Pedagogy and Guitar History and Literature; students in the organ program take Organ Performance Practice in the 17th and 18th Centuries, etc.). This type of supplemental course offers graduate students the opportunity to study and work with their mentors, the studio faculty, beyond their lessons and studio class. These courses often take the form of formalized independent study.
